Short answer: most clinical studies on collagen peptides use doses of 2.5 to 10 g per day, taken consistently for at least 8 to 12 weeks. That's the reference range to check on the label before buying — many products on the market contain far less per dose.
Why dosage changes everything
Collagen isn't a "homeopathic" active ingredient: scientific study protocols rely on precise amounts. A product labelled "marine collagen" that delivers only 500 mg per capsule falls well short of the studied doses. This is why powder formats matter: a 10 g dose of peptides simply can't fit into capsules (you'd need more than 15 a day).
Hydrolysed, peptides, Daltons: decoding the label
- Hydrolysed collagen (or collagen peptides): native collagen is a protein too large to be well absorbed. Hydrolysis breaks it down into small fragments, peptides, that the body can assimilate.
- Molecular weight (in Daltons, Da): the lower it is, the shorter and more bioavailable the peptides. A quality collagen is generally under 3000 Da, for example 2000 Da.
- Type 1 & 3: type 1 is the dominant collagen in skin; type 3 supports it in connective tissue. These are the types targeted for skin, as opposed to type 2 (cartilage).
When and how to take it
The time of day matters little: it's daily consistency that counts. The simplest approach is to anchor it in a routine, in the morning, dissolved in a large glass of water, a smoothie or a warm drink. Vitamin C is a logical addition: it contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin (a claim authorised under European regulation).
How long until you see results?
Skin renewal follows its own rhythm: studies run for 8 to 12 weeks. A course of at least 3 months is the reference duration, to be repeated as needed.
The Matirō example
At Matirō (Matiro), a French premium supplements brand, the Skin Booster delivers 10 g (10,000 mg) of clinically tested Aquacol® marine collagen peptides per dose, at the top of the studied range — with a low molecular weight (2000 Da, type 1 & 3), 500 mg of vitamin C (625% of the NRV), hyaluronic acid and our signature ingredient, Ubé. No added sugar, no additives, gluten-free, lactose-free, made in France. Every dosage is detailed on our Transparency page.
